Product Description
The SV-Pre is a JFET preamplifier inspired by the preamp section of the iconic 70s SVT. Each gain stage has been meticulously crafted to replicate the warmth and saturation characteristic of the original amplifier. With an integrated cab sim, you can achieve the colossal sound of a traditional bass amp stack without the hassle of hauling around 250 pounds of equipment.
Beyond the gain stage, the EQ and tone switches are engineered to mirror the response of the original amp. The Bass and Treble controls follow the classic James stack design, providing a shelving response for low and high frequencies, with the EQ set to flat at noon.
The mid control employs a simulated inductor to recreate the same frequency response and width as the SVT's mid control. Rather than being limited to three fixed frequencies, the frequency knob smoothly adjusts from 220 Hz to 3 kHz, with the mid EQ also flat at noon.
The Low toggle switch mirrors the three-way Ultra lo switch found on the SVT. When flipped right, a 2-pole high pass filter is engaged for a more natural drive tone. The middle position leaves the low end unaltered, while the left position introduces a subtle scoop, highlighting deep lows and treble frequencies. The Bright toggle switch enhances treble, especially noticeable at lower gain settings.
A Master volume knob is included for adjusting the overall output level, while the Gain knob controls the amount of warmth and overdrive, functioning similarly to the Volume knob on the 70s SVT.
This pedal requires a 9V DC power supply (not included). Do not exceed 9V to avoid damaging the unit. The power supply should feature a standard Boss-style connector with center negative polarity, drawing around 20 mA.
Power Supply Recommendations
The JFETs in the SV-Pre are sensitive to power supply noise. For optimal performance, it’s best to use a clean, isolated power supply, avoiding daisy chaining with other pedals. Some switch mode power supplies can introduce noise and should be avoided. Employing a high-quality, isolated supply will ensure the SV-Pre operates with minimal noise.
Additionally, the SV-Pre features a true bypass switch.
